Since 2004, mountaineers and mountain lovers in
Iran have been going to mark a day in Persian calendar as the National
Day of Mt. Damavand to more emphasize an importance of its natural
and environmental values.
According to Persian mythology, 4th of July - which
is called Tirgan feast - is the day that Arash the heroic Iranian
archer put his life on an arrow and threw it by a bow to new border
of Iran and Turan from the top of Mt. Damavand. So, it is supposed
that 4th of July could be a good choice to be called National Day of Mt
Damavand.
Alpine club of Iran has invited all of interested people to celebrate
this day by participating in different movements to raise awareness
on the importance of this mountain.
Celebrating the same day, Alpine club of Iran in cooperation of
local volunteers are going to hold a session in Rayneh village (south
of Mt. Damavand) on July 7, 2006 to review Damavand and its role
in the mountaineering history of Iran and the role of this mountain
in the Persian literature.
The event will be held at Ershad hall in Rayneh village (south of
Damavand), when the following contact numbers have been released
for more info on the event:

“We touched 8000m of Dhaulagiri in our summit attempt on Thursday
May 18, before the bad weather pushed us back to C3 on 7300m”,
said AmirHussain Jaber-Ansari on a call by his satellite phone to
IMZ last night.
“We stayed that night in C3, when we hardly came back to middle
C2 (6300m) in unstable weather of the day after”, he added.
“Finally, we descended to C1 today (May 20) and now we are
in BC, packing all of our stuff and waiting for our porters to come
up to BC tomorrow.” AmirHussain said.
Jaber-Ansari reminds of Italians Nives Meroi and Romano Bennet who
summitted Dhaulagiri on May 17. “All the other summit pushes
were unsuccessful and now all of the mountaineers are back in BC.
Monsoon is coming and mountaineers are leaving BC”, he noted.
Mehdi Etemadfar, AmirHussain Jaber-Ansari and Nader Forootan as
the first Iranians on Dhaulagiri had left Tehran toward Kathmandu
45 days ago.

Mehdi Etemadfar, AmirHussain Jaber-Ansari and Nader
Forootan, three Iranian mountaineers who had left Tehran toward
Kathmandu on April 3, flew by chopper to base camp of Dhaulagiri
on Monday April 17.
It was bad weather and deep snow, which caused them to take the

expeditions as well as a Columbian mountaineer did the same.
There is another Italian expedition at the same BC, which is fully
covered in fresh snow.

Two Iranians are heading for Dhaulagiri in Himalaya this spring.
Mehdi Etemadfar and AmirHussain Jaber-Ansari are leaving Tehran
toward Kathmandu on Monday April 3, 2006.
This is the first attempt of Iranians on Dhaulagiri
(means White Mountain in Sanskrit) the seventh
highest mountain in the world, which used to be known by wrong as
top of the world for nearly thirty years after its reconnaissance
in 1808 by western world. Though it took more than 150 years for
Dhaulagiri to be scaled for the first time by a Swiss-Austrian expedition
in 1960. They reached the top of the massif from NE face that is
known as normal route now. Two Iranian are aiming this face, which
is composed of steep icy steps and is supposed to need 3 or 4 camps
in the way. They are sharing their permit with a Spanish expedition.
Summiting Lenin (7134m) in Pamir and scaling Broadpeak (8046m) in
karakoram as the first Iranians in 2004, Mehdi and AmirHussain are
getting their climbing mate again in Dhaulagiri this season. Though
they are doing this expedition by their own budget, but they acknowledge
Iran Mountaineering Federation, Kassa climbing co. and few climbing
shops in Tehran to provide support for their expedition.
It is worth to mention that Nader Forootan the other Iranian mountaineer
is accompanying them to BC of Dhaulagiri.
Mehdi Etemadfar is leaving his hometown Tehran toward Kathmandu
on his 50th birthday on April 3 (Happy birthday Mehdi)! He is the
first and the only Iranian who has summited all 7000ers of former
Soviet Union and has been awarded the sign of Snow Leopard. He has
summited Peak Communism, Dushanbe and Korjenovskoy in summer of
99 and Khan-Tengri and Pobeda in a fast and alpine style alone (2001).
He has summied mount Lenin (2003) and scaled Broadpeak (true summit)
as the first and the only Iranian (2004).
AmirHussain Jaber-Ansari born in Tehran (1970) is a level 2 IMF’s
climbing instructor and has been in charge of Caving branch of IMF
for 2 years. He has been member of Damavand Mountaineering Club
of Tehran since 1984 and has passed winter climbing course in Scotland.
AmirHussain has been regular climbing partner of Mehdi from Lenin.
He has stood on Broadpeak (fore-summit) in 2004.
