The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO inscribed Bisotun on UNESCO’s World
Heritage List in July 2006.
As a world-famous and magnificently impressive site, Bisotun is Situated 25 km from
Kermanshah in the base of a mountain with the same name. About sixty meters up,
engraved into the mountain side, inscriptions in Old Persian, in Elamite and in
Babylonian surround a bas-relief illustrating Darius, the king of Persia (521-486 BC),
showing him after the victory over the rebels. In historical studies, these
inscriptions are extremely important, because they provided a clue to the
decipherment of cuneiform.
Of other impressive relics of the ancient times out there are a stony statue of
Hercules and relief's of the Parthian kings. The monuments belonging to the Sassanian
era as well as a caravansary and a bridge from the Safavid period indicate the
high importance of this district in different ages.
In short, Bisotun can be called a living museum of the Iranian civilization from ancient
times to the present.
It is worth to mention that a limestone wall in south-east face of Mount Bisotun is a
climbing resort where many climbers from around the country go there for climbing over
different routes some hundred meters away from that relief.
