Nine women will participate in the fourth selection camp of Tehran Province Expedition


 Women’s Third Selection Camp

The third stage of selection camps of Tehran’s women expedition was held on March 5th and 6th in "Daar-Abad"peak on the west shoulder of Mount Tochal.
According to Tehran Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Council’s official website, twelve women were tested on their skills by climbing Daar-Abad peak and stepping on the rocky flank in the north side of it under the supervision of Hussain Nazar and Reza kafaash as instructors.
Pooling their efforts, nine people out of them could enter the fourth camp, which will take place in April, 2009.

Fifteen alpinists passed the fourth stage of selection process


 Fourth Selection Camp

The fourth stage of selection camps to choose members of Tehran province’s expedition was carried out on March 11th and 12th in the Alborz Mountain Range near "Afjeh" village, north-east of Tehran. Located 60 km north-east of Tehran, "Afjeh" is surrounded by a few 3000m to 4000m high peaks. It makes the region as one of best spots for alpine activities near Tehran.
According to council’s official website, during a two-day camp, twenty one mountaineers showed off their technical skills and teamwork abilities under supervision of Abbaas Ali-Nezhad and Mahmoud Mir-Noori as instructors. Also, they ascended mount "Saaka" (3300m).
At the end of the test, fifteen persons were selected to enter the fifth stage, which will be held in April, 2009.

Mehdi Etemadfar to attempt on Dhaulagiri for the second time


Eastern North face of Dhaulagiri at dawn

Iranian alpinist Mehdi Etemadfar will fly from Tehran to Katmandu on March 23rd, third day of Persian New Year, in order to take part in an international expedition on Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest peak in the world. It is Mehdi’s second attempt on Dhaulagiri. In his first, touching the height of 8000 meters on Dhaulagiri, he and his friend Amirhussain Jaber-Ansari gave up further attempts because of severe weather condition.
On a call to IMZ News Department, Etemadfar was hopeful to ascend Dhaulagiri from eastern north route, which has been opened in 1960 by a Swiss/Austrian expedition.
Born in 1957 in Tehran, Mehdi is the first and the only Iranian, who has summited all 7000ers of former Soviet Union and has been awarded the sign of Snow Leopard from 1999 to 2003. He is also the first Iranian who succeeded to stand on Broadpeak summit in 2004 and two years later, he became the only Iranian who has climbed Gasherbrum 1.

Iranian environmentalists will join the International Day of Action for Rivers in Tonekabon city


International Day of Action for Rivers

Alpine Club of Iran along with women’s community of Tonekabon city to fight environmental pollutions will hold a one-day congress to join International day of action against dams and for rivers, water and life. This gathering will be held on Saturday, March 14th in Tonekabon city in Northern Province of Mazandaran, Iran.
During the congress, Mr. Abbaas Mohammadi, head director of Iran’s alpine club, Mr. Hamid Reza Ali-Zadeh, Ecology responsible of coldwater fishes Research center of Tonekabon city and Miss. Fatemeh Zafar-Nezahd, a researcher in the field of river environment will make some speeches in order to declare destructive effects of dam projects on river environments.
Twelve years ago, On March 1997, at the closure of the "1st International Meeting of affected people dams " in Curitiba, Brazil, the attendants from some twenty countries including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Mexico, USA, Russia, India, China, Thailand, Lesotho, France and Spain, signed the "Declaration of Curitiba" and declared March 14: "International Day of Action Against Dams and for Rivers, Water and Life".

The 9th Fajr Climbing Championship was held for men in Hamedan city


The 9th Fajr Climbing Championship

Following the 9th Fajr sport climbing championship for women, men’s competitions were started on Saturday, 28th of February in "Ibn-e-Sina" sport climbing arena of Hamedan city.
According to Iran Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation official website, one hundred and thirty four climbers from all over the country had took part in 3 categories of lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering.
The first two days dedicated to lead climbing comps, where Davoud Rekaabi from Zanjan topped the men’s podium in final round.
Hamid Reza Touzand-e-Jani from Nayshaabour was the man of fortune in the remaining three days where he took first place among 50 climbers in speed climbing, and also won the first prize in bouldering where 100 athletes had participated. A complete history of competitions results are listed at the bottom of the news.
Beside competitions, it was an opportunity to appreciate previous rock climbing masters of Hamedan province and also to be grateful of Hamid Asiaabaan for his yeoman’s services.
Fajr Championship is known as one of the biggest gathering of sport climbing stars in the country.

The 9th Fajr Climbing Championship for women took place


The 9th Fajr Climbing Championship

Fajr sport climbing championship, which has been carried out annually since nine years ago to mark the anniversary of " Islamic Revolution", was held for the women from February 19th to 23rd for the ninth time in Hamedan, Iran.
According to Iran Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation official website, the championship was the gathering of 100 women climbers from 14 provinces, who participated to compete in three categories of lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering.
At the end of a six-day comp in "Ibn-e-Sina" sport climbing gym, Elnaz Rekaabi from Zanjan climbed higher than several female finalists to win the championship and became the 9th Fajr senior female lead climbing champion.
Fifty climbers from Ardebil, Chahar Mahal-o-Bakhtiari, Esfahan, Fars, Khorasan-e-Razavi, Ghazvin, Gilan, Hamedan, Kerman and Zanjaan provinces were participants of speed climbing comp. Finally, Azam Karami from Zanjan stood on top as a result of her superb performance.
The last tournament was carried out on a short boulder wall, where 29 athletes faced off to determine the dominant. Ultimately, Elnaaz beat the other 28 boulderers and succeeded to won her second gold medal in 9th Fajr. A complete history of competition results are listed below.
The first 5 ranks of each comp were chosen to participate in preparatory camps of national rock climbing team of Iran.

The 2nd ice climbing festival was carried out in Roudbar-e-Ghasran region


Ice Climbing Festival

Alpine Club of Iran held the second ice climbing festival of Iran in Roudbar-e-Ghasran from February 10th to 13 th. Located 60 km north of Tehran at the heart of Middle Alborz, Roudbar-e-Ghasran is one of the best spots for ice climbing in Iran during cold season.
According to Iran Alpine Club’s official web site, during the Festival, sixty seven enthusiastic gathered from Tehran, Hamedan, Isfahan, Lavaasaan, Boroujerd, Mahaabaad, Yaasouj, Behbahaan, Birjand, Rasht, Khorram-Abaad, Saari and Zanjaan cities to be trained through climbing on "Abnik" and "Rote" icefalls and various workshops in four days. Hussain Boland Akhtar, Afshin Yousefi, Masoud Hamidi who had participated in the International Ice Climbing Festival in the French Ecrins in January 2009, were instructors in the festival as well as Mohammad Sabouri. Beside training courses, photo and film exhibition was held during the festival.
Haft Gohar, an Iranian producer of mountaineering gear was the main sponsor of the festival.
It’s worth saying, thirty eight climbers had participated in the first ice climbing festival in January 2008 in the same region.

Discovery of Mehran’s body after two days

The body of a climber killed Wednesday, February 11th in an avalanche on the slopes of Takht-e-soleyman mountainous region, was recovered some hours before.
According to a call by Kiyoumars Baba-Zadeh, the Rescue leader, a team composed of mountaineers from Kelardasht and Tehran conducted a search around the avalanche track near "Pit-Saraa" from Saturday morning, February 14th and after 48 hours of activity, on Saturday noon they succeded to find Mehran’s Body.

Avalanche in Takht-e-Soleyman region

A team of four mountaineers from Tehran, Karaj and Boroujerd were going to climb Alamkouh and Takht-e-Solaiman peaks in Takht-e-Soleyman region, when a deadly accident happend. Mehran Berenji, Esmaeel Rezaei, Ehsan Ahmadi Pour and Alireza Nouri had left Roudbarak Village in north of Iran toward Sarchal hut on Tuesday, February 10th. In the way toward Sarchal hut, they set up their camp in a place known as "Kangalak" and stayed in their tents while it was snowing during whole the night.
On a call to IMZ news department from Roudbarak Village, Kiyoumars Baba-Zadeh said:" The accident occurred when they changed their mind and decided to come back due to harsh weather condition. In a place lower than "Kangalak Paaein" , where Mehran was descending a couple of meters ahead of the others, a sudden flow of a large amount of snow was triggered, carrying him down the slope."
His friends reported the event to Roudbarak lodge in the village, when they found that their rescue effort is over. Indeed, the avalanche had swept a broad region, caused the rescue impossible at that time of the accident. So, they came back to the lodge in the village on February 12th, Kiyoumars added.

The second stage of selection process of Tehran province expedition team took place


 Toward Saat Peak

The second stage of preparation camp to choose members of Tehran province expedition team was hold in mount "Saat" (4000m), north of Taleghan. According to Tehran province Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Council’s website, forty five mountaineers who participated the camp from 4th to 6th of February, were led by Mohsen Nouri and Amir-Hosein Jaaber Ansaari as instructors. After setting up two camps in the route to the peak, the climb was called to be over.

Second stage of expedition teams selection process of Tehran province

Mountaineering and Sport Climbing council of Tehran province will hold the second stage of expedition team selection process during mountaineering festival of 30 years-30 peaks. The test will be carried out from February 4th to 6th on mount "Shah-Alborz" and mount "Saat" in north of Taleghan valley, which is located 120 km north west of Tehran.
According to official website of the council, The first stage was performed from January 23rd to 24th in the north of Tehran, on mount Tochal. The result of process will be formation of two separate expedition teams for men and women.
It’s worth saying that Tehran’s expedition team succeeded to ascend mount broad-Peak, twelfth highest peak in the world, which is located in Karakorum, last summer.

30 peaks around Taleghan valley will be ascent in 30th anniversary of Islamic revolution


 30 years-30 peaks Mountaineering and sport climbing council of Tehran province will organize a festival of mountaineering from 4th to 6th of February, 2009 in Taleghan region, Tehran province.
According to official website of the council, during the festival, 30 teams will try on 30 peaks around Teleghan valley in the heart of west Alborz to mark Islamic revolution’s 30th anniversary.
The mountainous and historical valley of Taleghan is located 120 km north-west of Tehran city, between northern slopes of Savej-Bolagh Mountains and southern slopes of Takht-e-Soleyman.

German flank trial was left unfinished again

The group of alpinists, who had started to climb German flank of Alam-Kouh Peak in Takht-e-Soleyman region on 5th of January, gave it up for long period of harsh weather.
On a call to IMZ news department, Mohammad Sabouri said: "We were deceived with variations in weather prediction. According to forecast in January 3rd, we expected to have 5 days of good weather, but on 4th of January we updated on the new forecast and found that the bad weather is coming in two days, therefore we had to start the climb in the next day."
"The beginning part of the flank was a traverse, in which my hand was hit by a fallen rock", he said. Endeavoring up to 11:00 A.M., Mohammad and Afshin have ascent one third of the flank and reached to the foot of a place called "Se-Rekaabi". Time was going on, while Mohammad was suffering from bad pain in his hand. So they decided to descend to Alamchal camp and afterwards to Sarchal lodge with the other members of the group.
Arriving to Sarchal, they checked weather condition in another call. The bad weather was coming. So, the group decided to come back to Tehran. The attempt to climb the German flank was over again.

Second ice climbing festival will be held in February, 2009

Alpine Club of Iran will organize the second ice climbing festival of Iran, in Roudbar-e-Ghasran region in Tehran province from 10th to 13th of February, 2009. The festival is supposed to provide opportunities for techniques exchange among ice climbers, beginners training, learning new techniques and detecting new Icefalls in Roudbar-e-Ghasran region.
According to official website of alpine club, training courses, climbing various icefalls, photo and film presentation, used equipment sale and ice climbing contest will be held during the festival.
Registration for the festival starts from January 10th, while deadline is January 29th. More information is available on www.alpineclub.ir

Mohammad and Afshin will start some hour later

On a call to German Flank team leader at 7 pm of Sunday, January 4th, Sabouri told they have pitched the tents on the northern shoulder of mount Shan-e-Kouh and planning for start tomorrow. Kiyoumars Babazade, the team link in Tehran told IMZ News Department that Afshin and Mohammad will start climbing German Flank early in tomorrow morning and two other mates will help them transferring backpacks to southern shoulder of mount Shan-e-Kouh, which is the beginning point.
He added, they have been forced to stay in Sarchal hut because of four-day harsh weather and have continued to Alamchal camp on Friday.
Quoting Sabouri’s word, Baba-Zadeh said:"Hungry animals had attacked their food stuff in Alamchal camp."

Another winter trial of German Flank of mount Alam-Kouh

On Monday, December 29th, a team of seven alpinists from Tehran and Karaj cities left for Roudbarak village in the slopes of Takht-e-Soleiman massif in Mazandaran province. Mohammad Sabouri(leader), Afshin Ramezani, Hamid Mohammad-Nazar(camera-man) , Mehdi Mohammad-Shahi, Moslem Iran-Nezhad, Pedram Ghazi and Reza Moradi are going to ascend North flank of mount Alam-Kouh ­the second highest peak in Iran­, which is known as "German Flank". Winter Ascent of German Flank is one of the most challenging alpine activities in Iran Mountain zone.
Sabouri, who has already climbed German Flank in winter 2002, on a call to IMZ, said: "Most of the expedition luggage was carried to camp sites in Alam-Chal and Sar-Chal, during two preliminary ascents in October and December. The first load included 350 kg of technical and camping stuff and the latter was 70 kg of personal gears."
Arash Mountaineers club of Tehran has sponsored the expedition by paying part of the expenses, according to Sabouri’ s state.
